A password resides in bits and bytes, just as any software does. A physical switch (e.g. a slider switch) can physically disconnect or write protect all or part of the drive contents from being read, being written-to etc. There could even be more than two settings (circuits) on the slider switch.

A slider switch, more likely. The illustration conveys the idea, but a lock & key would take us back to the last millennium :-)
